Spartan Army

The Spartan armies, though usually quite small, were well-disciplined and all but irresistible in combat. Early history of Sparta is not clear to identify. By the end of the 8th century BC, most of the other cities of Lakedaimonians were the only full time army in ancient Greece and truly an elite force. Lakedaimonian constitution was entirely to promote military virtue.

Lakedaimon, Lakedaimonia or Lakonia terms were used to refer to all regions direct Spartan control, including Messina. Sparta was generally referred them to by the ancient Greeks. Today the name of a province in the Modern Greek prefecture is Lacedaemon.

Also in Greek mythology, Lakedaimon was a son of Zeus and married with Sparta who was the daughter of Eurotas. He was the king of the country and named it after himself, naming the capital after his wife.
